The foundation

Our goal: Promotion of the health care system in Myanmar

Since 2013, the Bettina Kattermann Foundation has been awarding scholarships for postgraduate medical training for medical students from Myanmar. Due to the still unsatisfactory situation of medical education in Myanmar, postgraduate studies at Mahidol University in Bangkok are currently being promoted.

Our starting point: Consumption Foundation

The initial capital of the foundation was 200,000 euros. Since pure interest income is not sufficient for the foundation’s objectives, we have designed the foundation as a consumption foundation. This means that the scholarships are paid from the foundation’s capital and that we are continuously dependent on further endowments and donations in order to be able to continue supporting scholarship holders in the future.

Our commitment: Scholarships for the qualification of medical professionals

We currently award an annual scholarship for postgraduate studies at Mahidol University in Bangkok. In our selection we consider applicants of all denominations and especially support socially disadvantaged applicants. Scholarship amounts vary for the 12-14 month continuing education courses. Depending on the field of study, exchange rate, etc., we pay an average of approx. 16,000 euros per scholarship holder, of which 8,000 euros are tuition fees, 6,000 euros for accommodation and meals, and approx. 1,000 euros for incidental study costs (health insurance, study materials, books, etc.).

Our vision: multiple and sustainable support

We promote sustainably and on several levels. Our scholarship holders receive first-class further training. In this way they secure their professional existence. Their families also benefit: the later income often means financial support for the whole family. The scholarship holders are able to become socially and politically active with self-confidence through their education. And public health care in Myanmar benefits from highly trained professionals in the health system.
That is the vision we are working for. And we are already getting there! Our former scholarship holders are now working successfully in numerous medical projects in Myanmar.

Information and exchange

The Foundation provides information in German-speaking countries about health care in Myanmar, organizes discussion evenings and invites professionals to report on their work and experiences in Myanmar. Feel free to contact us for information or exchange.

Cooperation

The practical administration of the scholarship programme as well as the on-site support of the scholarship holders is carried out by the Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst (KAAD). We are very grateful for this voluntary support of our work: Like this, your donation or endowment goes directly to the scholarship holders without any deductions for salaries!

The Bettina Kattermann Foundation is explicitly interdenominational and advocates interreligious dialogue.

As a dependent foundation, the Bettina Kattermann Foundation is administered in trust by the Stiftung Asienhaus.

“I want to promote our country’s healthcare system because Myanmar is still a developing country. The country’s health care system urgently needs to improve.”
